Gold reaches the $1,000 an ounce level as dollar weakens (MarketWatch) (13-03-2008)

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Gold futures briefly breached the $1,000 level early Thursday, propelled by ongoing dollar weakness and bleak news from the financial sector.

Gold for April delivery slipped back from the record level but was still up $17.30 at $997.80 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange in early morning trade, as, according to analysts, conditions in the market went from bad to worse overnight.
