Hong Kong and mainland China shares gain (MarketWatch) (29-04-2008) HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- With the exception of Japanese markets that were closed for a holiday, Asian stocks were having an unsettled day on Tuesday one day before the Fed is due to announce its rate decision. Shanghai and Hong Kong stocks rose on strong earnings from Bank of China, while South Korean stocks declined on steep losses in Korean Air Co. on worries about rising fuel prices. China's Shanghai Composite climbed 1.4% to 3,522.13, following to sessions of declines, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index rose 0.9% to 25,887.83 and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index climbed 0.2% to 14,230.83. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index declined 0.1% to 5,599.50, after rising as high as 5,626.60 earlier in the day. South Korea's Kospi, which wavered between positive and negative territories earlier in the day, recently fell 0.9% to 1,807.44. Elsewhere, Taiwan's Weighted index dropped 0.7% to 9,012.78 and New Zealand's NZX 50 index lost 1.1% to 3,601.36. India's Sensitive Index, or Sensex, rose 0.3% to 17,067.75 in the early minutes.
